Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome is a group of 13 inherited disorders that affect your bodies connective tissues – primarily your skin, joints and blood vessel walls. With EDS, a gene mutation causes a certain kind of tissue (depending on the type of EDS) to be fragile and stretchy. It is quite common that someone with EDS may be able to extend their joints further than usual. This is what is known as hyper mobility syndrome (which is a forms of EDS)
What are the common symptoms?
EDS is often though of as an invisible disability but common symptoms of this include:
- long term pain
- chronic fatigue
- digestive disorders.
It is important to note that symptoms can vary massively depending on the type of EDS and the severity. Typically it is something that you are born with but your symptoms may not present themselves until later on in life.
How can we help?
Here at the clinic, any of our amazing team of Osteopsths, Christie our musculoskeletal therapist of Anna our massage therapist, are able to help ease your pain caused by EDS and the struggles it brings. Despite the hypermobility, joints can become stiff and muscles tight as they try to compensate for the soft tissue laxity. We can help alleviate this pain, using various different techniques. For example, our osteopaths can focus on gentle mobilisations of your stiff joints and our massage and musculoskeletal therapists can help with different massage techniques and exercises to help manage your pain.
