Breastfeeding Problems – How can Osteopathy help?

Breastfeeding for most should be the most natural thing in the world, and for many new mums it is. However if it isn’t working well, it can be distressing for both mother and baby. Understanding why some babies struggle can help to identify possible solutions to the problem.

Musculoskeletal issues are a common factor for breastfeeding related problems. Very often these involve neck and jaw issues.

Common breastfeeding issues include:

  • difficulty in latching
  • preference to 1 side
  • arching back when feeding
  • distress or discomfort when placed for feeding
  • ineffective suckling

Did you know that osteopathy came help with this? We offer cranial Osteopathy which uses a combination of gentle techniques to help release tension and stress. It focuses on:

  • The neck head and mouth – by gently releasing tension it contributed to improving suckling & reducing air sealing during feeds.
  • Visceral tension caused by colic creates tension in the sound which affects the mobility of the back and neck. This can interfere with food absorption as well as making breastfeeding.

Cranial Osteopathy can also help with:

  • Colic
  • digestive issues
  • trauma relating to birth
